As we age, the three-phase cycle of hair growth and regrowth changes, and the follicles shorten until they no longer regrow hair. This process works differently for everyone, and some people start going bald in their 20s, while others go bald much later. FUE hair transplantation restores hair by replacing old follicles with new follicles that can still produce hair. After the transfer of healthy hair follicles, the follicles will be fed by blood vessels and hair will begin to grow in the previously thinned or balding area.
What are the Preparations for FUE Hair Transplantation?
-
Do not smoke at least 24 hours before your operation, stop drinking alcohol 3 days before.
-
Avoid blood thinners about 2 weeks in advance.
-
Do not take nutritional or vitamin supplements 2 weeks before the operation.
-
Again, stop taking antidepressants 2 weeks before the operation.
-
Don't cut your hair.
-
Massage your scalp for 10 to 30 minutes every day for a few weeks to increase blood flow to your scalp.
-
Get electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood tests before surgery. (Your doctor will inform you about this and additional processes)
FUE Hair Transplant Procedure
-
Your surgeon shaves the hair in the area where the roots will be taken and around the planting area.
-
It removes follicles from your skin using a micropunch.
-
A small incision is made with a needle or other small sharp instrument in the area where the removed follicles will be placed, and the follicles are placed in the area opened with the incision. After the procedure is over, the area is cleaned and bandaged.
Is FUE Hair Transplantation a Risky Procedure?
In FUE hair transplantation, you will not experience any scars other than small white spots where the roots are taken. These scars will go away with time. However, you should contact your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects:
-
signs of infection
-
Drainage or crusting in the area where the surgery was performed
-
Pain and swelling or bleeding
-
Numbness and tingling in or near the area where the surgery is performed
What Should Be Considered After FUE Hair Transplantation?
Recovery is rapid after operations performed with the FUE method. It is normal to feel some swelling and discomfort for 3 days after the procedure. You should be meticulous in following the instructions your doctor will give you. In general, the instructions include:
-
Do not shower or wash your hair for a minimum of 3 days.
-
When your doctor says you can wash your hair, opt for fragrance-free and sensitive shampoos for a few weeks.
-
Do not scan newly placed grafts for at least 3 weeks.
-
Do not use hats and similar accessories until your doctor approves.
-
Avoid heavy exercise for at least a week.
During your healing process, you may observe some hairs falling out. Note that this is normal. You will probably start to look different 3-4 months after the procedure.
